20 Ever After Reimagines the Classic Cinderella Story
Released in 1998 and Directed by Andy Tennant
Ever After is an interesting take on the Cinderella fairytale, opting to set the story in the entirely real world of the Renaissance and remove all aspects of fantasy. As such, the story includes historical figures like Leonardo da Vinci and the Brothers Grimm, whose version of Cinderella is compared against the "true" story as told by the film.
The protagonist Danielle, played by Drew Barrymore, disguises herself as a noblewoman after an accidental run-in with Prince Henry so that they can continue their relationship. For a film released in the '90s, Danielle takes a surprising amount of agency into her own hands, and the film gives her qualities that elevate her beyond a Cinderella archetype.

19 Corpse Bride Is a Fun Watch Both In and Out of Halloween
Released in 2005 and Directed by Tim Burton and Mike Johnson
Despite becoming a Halloween classic, Corpse Bride is a great movie to watch regardless of the time of year. The film tells the tale of Victor (voiced by Johnny Depp), who accidentally winds up engaged to the titular undead bride. Emily (voiced by Helena Bonham Carter), who was murdered on her own wedding night, at first happily accepts a marriage to Victor, but eventually decides to help him marry the one he truly loves.

Although the other stop-motion musical that Tim Burton produced, The Nightmare Before Christmas, has found more widespread popularity, Corpse Bride is a wonderful film in its own right that uses its format to great effect. The spindly appearances of the character models perfectly fit the realm of the dead as well as the bleak Victorian setting. The story is as haunting as it is beautiful, ultimately capturing the spirit of hope despite its dark atmosphere.

17 Galaxy Quest Is an Evergreen Sci-Fi Parody
Released in 1999 and Directed by Dean Parisot
✕ Remove Ads
Though not a direct send-up, Galaxy Quest was clearly made with the the Star Trek franchise in mind. It tells the story of a group of has-been actors who made names for themselves on a similar sci-fi series, now reduced to signing autographs and answering questions at conventions. That's when a group of friendly aliens arrives, believing them to be the heroes they only played on TV and begging for their help against a very real interstellar warlord.
Like all great parodies, Galaxy Quest shows a great deal of affection for the subject of its jabs. It's not hard to envision the Original Series crew in similar circumstances, though the film does wonders in establishing its characters as singular and sympathetic despite their foibles. The late Alan Rickman steals the show as a trained Shakespearean long resentful of being shackled to what he feels was an unworthy role, only to find new meaning in the effect it has on his viewers. The film makes a fantastic chaser to more serious space operas, as well as a celebration of fandom that holds up extremely well to repeat viewings.

14 Great Expectations Is a Beloved Classic

There have been numerous adaptations of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations, but the 1946 movie is among the most beloved. The classic coming-of-age tale follows a young boy who encounters criminals, grande dames, and more as he figures out what kind of man he wants to be and learns many life lessons along the way.

With so many on-screen versions of Dickens' work being released over the years, it can be a daunting task to pick one to start with, but the 1946 film is a great contender due to its stunning visuals and memorable performances.

A masterpiece from director James Cameron, Titanic tells the story of first-class passenger Rose as she develops a romance with artist Jack on a ship that is doomed to never reach its destination. They grow close in spite of their class differences, and Rose slowly becomes inspired by Jack to break free of the societal expectations that have been placed upon her.
Though primarily remembered as a sweeping romance, Titanic is also a great historical film that accurately depicts many aspects of the famous ship. Cameron did extensive research on the Titanic while making the film, even going to the site of the disaster himself and using real footage of the shipwreck. The movie still looks beautiful many years after its release, and it is easily deserving of the several awards it won as a result.
