How to keep your curls in tip-top shape as the seasons change.

With cooler temperatures setting in, many of us are swapping our tank tops for cozy sweaters. But, have you considered that along with your wardrobe, you also may need to switch up your hair-care routine, especially if you have textured strands? As the temperatures cool down and the air becomes dry, curl rejuvenating products are critical.
“Curly and coily hair is naturally drier,” says celebrity hairstylist Brendnetta Ashley, a Schwarzkopf Professional ambassador. “Keep this in mind as the seasons change to ensure your hair will always look and feel its best.”
Brendnetta Ashley’s Picks for Curl Rejuvenating Products
1 / 3
Oribe Cleansing Crème for Moisture & Control ($49)
As Ashley explains, during colder and drier weather conditions, our number-one hair-care focus should be moisture, which includes the scalp. “Extend time in between shampooing to prevent drying out your scalp and hair,” she says. But, this doesn’t necessarily mean we have to go more than a week without a wash day. Instead, every other week, consider swapping out your regular shampoo for a co-wash, like Oribe’s Cleansing Crème for Moisture & Control, which can be gentler and less drying.

Sienna Naturals Hydrating H.A.P.I Shampoo ($28)
Then, during the weeks that require a thorough cleanse, Ashley recommends using a hydrating shampoo instead of a clarifying formula. We’re loving the Issa Rae–backed Sienna Naturals Hydrating H.A.P.I Shampoo.

Schwarzkopf Professional OSiS+ Bounty Balm Rich Curl Cream ($26)
In terms of styling, Ashley is a big fan of the LOC (liquid, oil, cream) method to keep thirsty strands quenched. “Begin with a liquid leave-in conditioner and then add an oil. Lastly, use a styling cream or gel,” she says, noting that Schwarzkopf Professional OSiS+ Bounty Balm Rich Curl Cream is her preferred pick for the last step. “This will lock moisture into the hair and prevent dryness.”

SheaMoisture Amla Oil Bond Repair Masque ($12)
If summer styling has your curls looking out of whack, be sure to add this repair mask to your upcoming wash-day regimen. Using a blend of amla oil, fair trade shea butter and the brand’s own amino blend, expect six times stronger hair and 84-percent less breakage with regular use. And, you only need to leave it in for five minutes.

The Dyson Chitosan Pre-Styling Hair Cream and The Dyson Chitosan Post-Styling Hair Cream ($59 each)
While you may already be familiar with Dyson’s hot tools, the brand has now expanded into styling products, with the launch of the Pre-Style Cream and Post-Style Serum. They pair perfectly with the brand’s beloved Supersonic blowdryer and the new Airwrap i.d. (along with the OG version). Made with hero ingredient chitosan, these two products help keep your style in place, no matter the weather—without the dreaded stickiness or crunch. “The complex macromolecule [chitosan] helps create flexible bonds that support hair strand by strand, for two times the hold, with movement and shine,” says James Dyson, brand founder and chief engineer.

Mielle Rosemary Mint Clarifying Scalp Scrub ($10)
When Mielle first launched its Rosemary Mint line in 2018, it quickly became a cult-favorite among both Mielle loyalists and newcomers. So, it only makes sense to expand the line with a Scalp Scrub. To apply, use the applicator tip, or a comb, to part your hair while dry. Then squeeze the cooling formula directly onto your scalp and gently massage it in. Be sure to rinse thoroughly before following up with your preferred wash-day products. This product is perfect for curbing any flaking or itching due to dryness.

Naked by Essations Infusion 365 Leave-In ($15)
This leave-in conditioner uses a blend of cypress, almond and jojoba oils, which offer vitamins A, B, C, E and F, along with omegas. Together, they help reduce dryness and frizz, protect against heat damage, encourage hair growth, and lock in moisture. Use this product as the first step in your LOC method on wash days, or simply spritz it on whenever your curls need a quick refresh.
5 / 6
Cécred Hydrating Conditioner ($30)
If you have finer strands and feel like heavier conditioners weigh your curls down, this conditioner may be perfect for you. The concentrated formula offers impressive slip and weightless hydration that leaves hair feeling noticeably softer and looking shinier after just one use. Plus, the brand’s signature Temple Oud scent will make your wash day feel all the more luxurious.

Shark Beauty SpeedStyle Pro Flex Hair Dryer System ($229)
For those who like to use heat, but still want to keep their curls intact, Shark Beauty’s latest hot tool offers four attachments and heat damage protection. (Yes, you heard that right.) Using IQ Styling and Scalp Shield technology, the SpeedStyle Pro automatically adjusts, measures and regulates airflow and temperature, which never exceeds 230 degrees Fahrenheit. It does all this while protecting the scalp and new hair growth from extreme heat. Expect salon-quality results without having to compromise your natural texture.
